No Wii DVD this year

kotaku.com publish a blog: as titlejust in case someone here care about it... :PNo Wii DVD this year
You mean I can't buy an all new Wii console this year to add to my 2 other DVD players currently connected to my TV including my Xbox 360?Damn!No Wii DVD this year
Go buy a DVD player. It's so useless to have DVD playback on a console.
Nintendo will not incorporate DVD playback untill someone has one the format war. It's all or nothing for Nintendo, and I think we've all come to realize that is the most conservative and risky business motto.
I used my PS3 for playing dvds. And If I didnt have that. Id go out and buy a cheapass dvd player. Theyre so common these days that we dont need them in consoles.
OH crap! I better return those DVD's I bought for christmas as I won't be able to play them anymore. I can't believe it's delayed! Why Ninny, why?! */sarcasm*
 :lol:and btw... i do not if you guys understood that i wanted this... i would never use a dvd player on a console, at least so far i ahve not.. i do not even use the one on my ps2.. (my laptop may get jealous  )I posted this bc someone was talking about a related topic a couple of days ago... so... :PSee you all around..

That's being a little extreme. Perhaps you would not use it, but there are those who would. Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all mad/irritated/whatever about the fact that there won't be DVD playback on the Wii...but if they offered a software upgrade to allow playback, I'd be first in line. I live in a house with 7 other guys, and we use a PS2 for a DVD player. That's all it gets used for. It would be really nice to be able to use the Wii instead, and we could leave that PS2 in a box somewhere.
Having a dvd player in a wii isn't that important to me considering I have a ton of places that I could already play them.
I'd definitely use a Wii DVD player, but it's nowhere near the top of my priority list.

My sentiments exactly. It's not a deal-breaker (obviously, since I camped out for the thing on launch day anyway), but it sure would be a sweet thing to have.
the thing is what thy going 2 do with people who have the wii's on day 1
Go buy a DVD player. It's so useless to have DVD playback on a console.
How is it useless?

Go buy a DVD player. It's so useless to have DVD playback on a console.
How is it useless?
It's not exactly useless. It's just that the majority of people already have several DVD players. It's unnecessary to have another one. Of course there are people who don't have a DVD player and who might be interested in a DVD attachment. But otherwise people would rather just buy a DVD player itself as you can get a good one for quite cheap.

(Blu-Ray/HDDVD are fighting in a completely different war)Anyways, yeah.. it's so utterly pointless to have DVD playback. Sure it was cool during the last generation... when standalone players cost hundreds of dollars. Nowadays you can pick one upfor 20-30USD.

Unfortunately for you, your comment is pretty irrelevant. If Nintendo was going to incorporate any kind of DVD playback, it would be standard DVD, since the Wii cannot output anything greater than 480p. Having HDDVD or Bluray, no matter which one wins, would be ridiculous, since limiting them to standard DVD resolution makes them worthless.
I was thinking about this, and I finally found a reason to care about the Wii being able to play DVDs. If my DVD player died today, it would be nice to have a fail-over. I'm not ready to buy a new DVD player because I want to see whether HDDVD or BluRay becomes the next Beta.
Go buy a DVD player. It's so useless to have DVD playback on a console.
The PS2 was my DVD player for a long time until my brother took it too college.TBH, that's mostly what I used my PS2 for.But like Plothole said, many people have/can afford DVD players now since they're relatively cheap unlike the prices during the beginning PS2 era.
Are me and my friends the only people on the planet that feel like just because you ''could'' buy a dvd player for $20-30 you shouldn't have to if your console supports it?I also don't like adding another remote to the small army of remotes that I already have. I think it would be great if I could retire my PS2 and just have my TV, cable box, and Wii. My hopes were high about the chance to do that, but Nintendo dropped the DVD playback at the last minute. Well, I can accept my Wii being the ''system on the side'' if Nintendo can. Because unlike everyone else on these forums, I own 1 DVD player, and that's my PS2.
I second the majority of people on this forum! It wouldn't be worth buying a whole new Wii, or even an expansion just to play DVDs. You can pick up a DVD player for like ?5 nowadays anyway :P Nintendo make their consoles good enough already without dressing them up in gimmickyaccessories.That'swhythePS3isn'tsellingtoowellandtheDSiswinningthehandheldwarhaha.
